I'm off on an adventure

This is a magical time of year in the Highlands. Gradually, almost imperceptibly, the hills are changing colour - from the dark greens of August to a palette of tan and copper. The first snows have already settled on the highest peaks and the nights have a bite to them. The midges have largely departed, the summer crowds have gone with them, and the light has lost the harsh and exhausting quality it can sometimes have in the hotter months of the year.

Autumn is my favourite season anywhere; doubly so in the Highlands.

This time my destination is Glen Shiel, a region northwest of Fort William whose main claim to fame is a remarkably high concentration of Munros (mountains over 3,000 ft in height). I've never visited Glen Shiel before and so every route will be new to me. I've found that since moving away from Scotland I have been to several new places I never got round to visiting while I lived there: the Alder forest, Blair Atholl, and now Glen Shiel.
